GOAL
The broad goal of teaching undergraduate students in General Medicine is to prepare them to function as competent first-contact physicians capable of diagnosing, treating, and preventing common medical illnesses as per CBME guidelines and to create Indian Medical Graduates (IMGs).
OBJECTIVES
During the training, students should acquire the following competencies, knowledge, skills, and hands-on training to practice General Medicine effectively after graduation.

COMPETENCIES
The undergraduate must demonstrate:
1.Understanding of normal and abnormal human physiology.
2.Understanding the pathophysiology of common medical diseases.
3.Ability to obtain a complete and relevant medical history.
4.Competence in performing thorough clinical examination.
5.Ability to formulate differential diagnoses and management plans.
6.Understanding the principles of evidence-based medicine.
7.Recognition and management of common medical emergencies.
8.Interpretation of laboratory and radiological investigations.
9.Effective communication with patients, relatives, and healthcare teams.
10.Ability to work as a team member in multidisciplinary care.
11.Understanding ethical and professional responsibilities.
12.Commitment to lifelong learning and patient-centered care.

KNOWLEDGE
At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
1.Diagnose and manage common acute and chronic medical conditions.
2.Understand indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of commonly used drugs.
3.Recognize and manage medical emergencies promptly.
4.Interpret ECG, chest X-ray, and routine laboratory investigations.
5.Understand preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative aspects of healthcare.
6.Manage patients with diabetes, hypertension, respiratory, renal, infectious, and cardiovascular diseases.
7.Provide appropriate counseling regarding lifestyle modification and disease prevention.
8.Understand national health programs and their implementation.
9.Practice rational use of investigations and medications.
10.Demonstrate principles of medical ethics, patient safety, and quality healthcare.

SKILLS
At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
1.Record history and perform clinical examination competently.
2.Measure vital signs and assess patient condition.
3.Interpret common investigations and formulate treatment plans.
4.Perform basic bedside procedures under supervision.
5.Manage common medical emergencies and initiate resuscitation measures.
6.Communicate effectively with patients and caregivers.
7.Maintain accurate medical records and documentation.

Integration of General Medicine in Medical Education and HealthCare
The department shall adopt an integrated approach with clinical and pre-clinical disciplines such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, Radiology, and other specialties. This integration will enable students to understand the scientific basis of diseases, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, prevention, and rehabilitation.

The teaching program shall be aligned both horizontally and vertically to facilitate comprehensive learning and help students appreciate the role of General Medicine in patient care at primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare levels. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical medical practice, and holistic patient management.

At the end of the course, the student shall be able to perform:
1.Effective communication with patients, relatives, colleagues, and healthcare staff.
2.Complete history taking and systematic clinical examination.
3.Interpretation of common laboratory investigations, ECG, and radiological findings.
4.Diagnosis and management of common medical illnesses and emergencies.
5.Basic life support (BLS) and initial management of critically ill patients.
6.Counseling regarding disease prevention, lifestyle modification, and treatment adherence.
7.Rational prescription of medications and monitoring for adverse effects.
8.Documentation of medical records and preparation of discharge summaries.
9.Function effectively as a member and leader of a healthcare team.
10.Practice medical ethics and professionalism in all aspects of patient care.
